MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- An estimated 600 farmers from all across Alabama are expected to gather Aug. 5-7 when the Alabama Farmers Federation takes its 38th annual Commodity Producers Conference to Columbus, Ga.

"We're proud to return to Columbus, Ga., to give our members a view of what is happening in not only eastern Alabama but western Georgia as well," said Jimmy Carlisle, director of the Federation's Governmental and Agricultural Programs Department. "We have some wonderful agricultural tours lined up for our members and several seminars that will help them back home on their farms."

Dr. Bill Batchelor, new dean of Auburn University's College of Agriculture and director of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station, and Chip Blalock, executive director of the Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie, Ga., will speak during Thursday night's opening banquet.

Motivational speaker/comedian Rik Roberts of Nashville will provide the entertainment, sponsored by Alfa Health, Alfa Dental and Swisher International/Sunbelt Ag Expo.

Attendees will board tour buses Friday morning for a series of five tours to farms, related businesses and sites throughout west Georgia and east Alabama. Among the stops will be a horse and cattle farm, Auburn University's poultry science department, bio-energy lab and Raptor Center and visits to the horticulture operations at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga.

Saturday will be devoted to educational seminars designed to help farmers be more successful and update them on current agricultural issues such as animal welfare, feral hog research, Alabama Farmland Protection, state and national legislative updates and even a briefing on social media's potential for agriculture.

Also Saturday, the Federation's Women's Leadership Committee will host its annual luncheon during which it will announce the winners of its tablescapes, quilting and purse contests.

At Saturday night's closing banquet, Alfa Dental, Alfa Health and Swisher International/Sunbelt Ag Expo will sponsor surprise entertainment.
