FARMERS MARKET NUTRITION PROGRAM ANNOUNCES IMPROVED APPLICATION PROCESS FOR SENIORS
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Farmers Market Authority has a new computer registration procedure for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) aimed at improving how Alabama's senior citizens apply for coupons used to buy fresh, locally grown produce.
"The coupon program is a great way to connect seniors who enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables with the farmers who grow them," said State Farmers Market Authority Director Don Wambles. "Many seniors already have submitted their application through the U.S. Postal Service and those applications already are being processed. However, anyone who has not already applied for the program this year should use the new online procedure. The online process to request coupons allows seniors to avoid standing in long lines to apply for the program. This method utilizes the best technology available and helps streamline the application process. The online application should expedite deliver of coupons that will be mailed to qualified seniors who are approved."

Eligibility requirements are:
• Age 60 or older (Must be born on or before Dec. 31, 1951)
• Total income for the household must not exceed: $16,800 for a household of 1; $22,600 for a household of 2; or $28,400 for a household of 3.
"Seniors who don't have computer access in their home are encouraged to ask family members who do have a computer to help them apply," Wambles said. "Free computer access also is available at public libraries throughout the state."
