MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Some of the state's most talented teenagers focused their creative skills for Alfa's DRV NOW TXT L8R video contest that took aim at a problem that is a major cause of accidents and death of young drivers.

The 12 finalists for the contest have been selected and are posted to AlfaDriveSmart . The first, second and third place winners will be announced at a statewide press conference in early May. The online video contest, which was a collaboration of Alfa Insurance, the Alabama Department of Education and the Alabama Independent School Association, began Jan. 1 and ended March 31. More than 150 videos were entered in the contest.

The first-place winner or group will receive one iPad2 (valued at $600) plus $1,500 in cash. The winning student (or group's) school will receive $1,500. The second-place winner will receive one iPod Touch (valued at $250) plus $1,000 in cash. The school of the second-place winner or group will be awarded $1,000. The third-place winner or group will receive one iPod Nano (valued at $150) plus $750 in cash. The school of the third-place winner or group will be awarded $750.

Alfa Public Relations Director Jeff Helms said the idea for the contest actually came from Alfa Insurance policyholders who said the issue of distracted driving is a great concern for them. He said the talent and creative thinking by the young people who entered the contest was impressive.

"It is obvious that students not only have embraced new technology, but they understand its potential for advocacy and marketing," Helms said. "Some of the videos will stir your emotions, while others will tickle your funny bone. We hope other students and adults will view the videos and share them with friends through Facebook and Twitter. If this program helps save one life, it will be successful."
