PEANUT PRODUCERS ASSOCIATION TO HOLD PRODUCER REFERENDUM MAY 26
The Alabama Peanut Producers Association is required to hold a producer referendum every three years to continue the Peanut Promotion, Research and Information Order, also known as the check-off program. This year's vote will take place May 26.Polling sites have been established in every county that had more than 500 acres of peanuts in 2010. Polling hours will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. unless otherwise specified. Those eligible to vote include:
• Any producer who has grown peanuts in crop years 2008, 2009 or 2010
• Individual members in farm or partnership entities who had a financial risk in the production of the crop in the qualifying years
• Growers who live in Alabama but may have marketed their peanuts in neighboring states
• Out-of-state producers who produced or marketed peanuts in Alabama
The check-off program requires that all peanut producers pay an assessment of one percent of the total value of all farmers' stock peanuts. These funds are used to conduct generic promotion, research, and consumer and producer information designed to strengthen peanuts' position in the marketplace and to maintain, develop, and expand markets for peanuts.
