HANDS-ON DAIRY GOAT WORKSHOP RAISES YOUTH AWARENESS
MILLBROOK, Ala. - When most kids think about milk, they think about cows. But from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 25, it's all about goats at the Dairy Goat Awareness Introductory Resource for Youth, or "Dairy Goat U," at A A Farm in Millbrook. "This is an excellent opportunity for young people to have a hands-on learning experience with dairy goats and the products made from their milk," said Guy Hall, director of the Alabama Farmers Federation's pork and poultry divisions. "Programs like Dairy Goat U do an outstanding job helping youth understand the importance of small scale dairy production, animal care and proper nutrition." By participating in Dairy Goat U, 25 youth ages 9--19 will learn about the ins and outs of dairy goats, including: • Dairy goat breeds
• Evaluation (Judging and DHIA)
• Cheese making
• How does a goat make milk?
• Dairy terminology
• Feeding
• Milking demonstration
• Soap making
Dairy Goat U is a hands-on workshop coordinated in conjunction with the Auburn University Extension service.
