TUSKEGEE UNIVERISITY TO PROVIDE HANDS-ON TRAINING FOR MEAT GOAT PRODUCERS
TUSKEEGEE, Ala. - Tuskegee University is offering an annual Master Goat Producer's Training Certification course in response to the increased interest in meat goat production in recent years.The fourth annual certification program is scheduled for Aug. 8--10 at the Tuskegee University Caprine Research Education Unit. The program lasts from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. During the program, new and established producers will receive information about raising healthy, productive meat goats by attending classes on herd health, marketing, nutrition, pasture management, bio-security, bio-terrorism awareness, quality assurance, disaster preparedness and reproductive management. The program includes hands-on training in hoof trimming, assessing body condition scores, judging livestock, FAMACHA and herd health and pasture management. Three levels of program certification are available. "Grants for Producers," a pre-workshop event sponsored by Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) will be Aug. 7 at 6 p.m. Contact Marilyn Hooks at mhooks@mytu.tuskegee.edu or (334) 727-8453 for registration and information.
