The Calera Farmers Market placed 20th in the Boutique Markets category, and the Pepper Place Saturday Market in Birmingham placed fourth in the Large Markets category.
There are four categories based on size within the contest: Boutique Markets (15 or fewer vendors), Small Markets (16--30 vendors), Medium Markets (31--55 vendors) and Large Markets (56 or more vendors).
Pepper Place Saturday Market was also the state winner and received 2,348 votes.
Other state winners were Montevallo Farmers Market, second place; Calera Farmers Market, third place; Helena Market Days, fourth place; and West Homewood Farmers Market, fifth place.
The contest exists to raise national awareness about the importance of buying fresh food from local farms and conserving farmland where that food is grown.
"I have seen how consumers are demanding more and more fresh flavor that only farmers markets can offer," said Alabama Farmers Federation Horticulture Division Director Mac Higginbotham. "Every market is different and each is a great model for improving the local economy. It is a win-win situation, and as a bonus, the consumer saves money buying directly from the producer."
The top 20 markets in each state will receive a prize package including a certificate and "I Support My Farmers Market" promotional stickers.
Farmers market enthusiasts across the country were able to vote to support their favorite farmers markets June 1 to Aug. 31 as part of the American Farmland Trust's annual America's Favorite Farmers Markets contest.
