“Beef month is our largest promotional month of the year and it coincides with the time of year that large numbers of calves are sent to market," said ACA President Jimmy Holliman of Marion Junction. "We look forward to showcasing beef around the state to consumers and encourage people to support this large industry by enjoying beef at home or when dining out.”
The 21,415 cattle farmers in the state own 1.2 million head that are valued at $873 million annually. Beef cattle rank 2nd only to the poultry industry among all Alabama commodities in cash receipts received. Most farms utilize hay for feeding cattle during the winter months and Alabama is a large hay producer. Over 780,000 acres are in hay production with a crop value of $195 million.
Beef Month will be filled with programs and events all across Alabama to showcase the cattle industry and its product beef. In addition, consumers can join the “Bama Beef Text Club” and enter a drawing for a chance to win an Iron Bowl Beef Tailgate provided by the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association. Make sure you click on the BEEF banner advertisements for your chance to win or text “BEEF” to 20566 on your cell phone.
Locally, county cattlemen’s chapters will be joining in the promotion fun by hosting steak sandwich sales and participating at local fairs to highlight beef during the month.
