Top Scientists And Ag Experts Address Farmers At Organizational Conference

Some of the state’s top scientists and agricultural experts will meet with nearly 700 farmers who attend the Alabama Farmers Federation’s three-day Commodity Organizational Conference, Feb. 12-14 in Montgomery.

Farmers who attend the meetings at the Embassy Suites Hotel will discuss topics from government regulations and legislation to marketing and disease traceability. They also will set goals and priorities for 16 different commodities represented by the Alabama Farmers Federation. The farm leaders, who were selected to represent their home county at the meeting, will share concerns and ideas on current issues they face and set policies and priorities for the year.

Outgoing committee members will be recognized at lunch each day, while new state commodity committee members will be elected during the conference. Newly elected Federation President Jimmy Parnell is expected to address the farmers.

Regular registration closed Jan. 11, but late registration is available until the start of the event. The cost is $25 per day, plus a $25 late fee. On-site registration is $65 per day and does not include lunch.

Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. each morning. Commodity meetings, featuring field experts, begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude by 3:30 p.m.

Beef, catfish, cotton, pork and bee & honey commodity leaders will meet Feb. 12. Leaders in the dairy, forestry, hay & forage, horticulture and meat goat & sheep divisions meet Feb. 13. The conference ends Feb. 14 with meetings for equine; greenhouse, nursery & sod; poultry; soybeans; wheat & feed grains; and wildlife divisions.

The Alabama Peanut Producers Association (APPA), a division of the Alabama Farmers Federation, will host its annual meeting Feb. 7 in Dothan in conjunction with the Alabama-Florida Peanut Trade Show at the National Peanut Festival Fairgrounds.
